At IRIS, a broad range of research topics in security, privacy, and systems are being explored. Currently, we are focusing on passive attacks against anonymous communications systems. Anonymity provides a powerful form of privacy by which a communicating user hides her identity within a large group of users. Passive attacks against these systems can be very dangerous, as they may be very difficult to detect while being quite effective at exposing the users' identities. We study both the nature and cost of the attacks, as well as studying defenses that make such attacks more difficult to perform. We are also investigating privacy and security applications for incentives and reputation, privacy controls for pervasive networks, identity escrow, and privacy controls for data mining.
